In a school AU: if Bertholdt were to ask Annie out, he probably wouldn’t even dare to say the word “date” around her. Most likely Reiner would force Bertholdt to confess, probably telling him to write a note and leave it in her locker. So Bertholdt, nervously, will write a note and he will slip it into Annie’s locker and then make an escape. When Annie comes and opens her locker and finds the note, the only thing it says is “Yes or no.” He was so nervous that he forgot to ask if she wanted to go on a date with him.
